Veterans – A Journey from Country to Campus

Today we take a look at a portion of the Chico State Community known for their commitment, resilience and strength. Thank you to our guest Larry Langwell. Take a listen and find out about the rich history Chico State has with supporting our veterans on campus, and the efforts they continue to make to enhance veterans’ personal and academic pursuits. On this episode, we discuss the importance of supporting veterans in their transition from the military to higher education, hear about successes as well as common challenges.

Our Guests

Larry Langwell

Larry Langwell, the Program Coordinator of Veteran Education Transition Services (VETS), the Staff Advisor for the Chico State Student Veteran Organization (SVO), and also the CEO of VECTORS (Veteran Executive Corporation To Organize Rehabilitative Services), if that is not enough he has also been a faculty member in the College of Business and the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management.

As our topic today is being first gen and a veteran, Larry is a veteran of the USAF, 1980-85, Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist and honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. His transition back to civilian life was very hard. Which entailed relocatingseeking treatment, and changing careers with a wife and 2 children. After a few years of struggling, he and his wife decided that education was their key to success. They both started at Chico State in 1992 as firstgeneration students with 4 children in our home. He was fortunate to secure employment in the Office of Veterans’ Affairs as a student while completing my BS in Construction Management in 1996 and have been on staff as the fulltime Coordinator of Veteran Services ever since graduation. I also completed the master’s in business administration in 2015.
