Episode 27 – For Love of The Sport
First Generation - One of Many

For Love of The Sport

Chico State is home to an abundance of skilled students, staff, and faculty. It is a campus of scholars, athletes, and scholar/athletes, a population that manages to balance both. On this episode, it is our pleasure to talk with a student/athlete and the Men’s Soccer coach to learn more about being a first-generation student who also balanced sports at a college level, all the while managing life’s curve balls.

Our Guests

Yaneesa Velasquez

Yaneesa was born in Chico, California and raised just 20 minutes from Chico in the small town of Orland. After high school, She went to Feather River College to continue her academics while playing a captain’s role on the women’s basketball team. After two years there, she graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Social Science and Behaviors and then transferred to Chico State to pursue her BFA in Interior Architecture. Yanessa is currently going to be a Senior at Chico State in Fall 2021, but still has two years until she obtains her BFA.

Felipe Restrepo

Felipe Restrepo is in his 14th year as Chico State’s head men’s soccer coach. Entering the 2021 campaign, Restrepo has guided the Wildcats to a 130-66-31 record and nine postseason appearances in his 13 seasons at the helm. Restrepo has led the ’Cats to three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division crowns and one NCAA West Region title while making nine trips to the conference championship tournament and four NCAA Championship Tournament appearances.

As a midfielder for UC Davis, Restrepo was a four-year letterwinner, starting 52 of his final 55 games for the Aggies, and during his junior year was a Second Team All-Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC) selection. Felipe has also been a member of the state and regional Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams, and in 1999, he attended the U.S. Soccer Festival with the U-23 Region IV ODP team.

Felipe received his bachelor’s degree in human development at UC Davis in 1998, and a master’s in multicultural education at Cal State Monterey Bay in 2001. Restrepo earned his doctorate in social organization and educational policy through UC Davis in 2014.
