Basic Needs – Compassion, Care, & Love for the Soul

Experiences this past year have raised awareness about the already important and numerous discussions and efforts focused on basic needs. If you would like to learn more about what is happening at Chico State to support student, staff, and faculty basic needs, this episode is for you. Our guests shed light on how campus and the surrounding communities have come together to uplift lives as well as transform the idea of community and supporting one another. As the Basic Needs Program at Chico State says “Go at the pace of wellness and intention.”

Leah Slem

Leah Shas worked on campus for nine years with TRIO programs which support first-generation and/or low-income students. Just recently she accepted a new position as the Basic Needs Manager. In her new role she manages the day-to-day operations of the Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry. Leah, her husband and daughter have lived in Chico for 11 years and enjoy spending time hiking and swimming in all the local swimming holes. 

Emma Jewett

Emma grew up in Butte County, she graduated from Chico State with her BA in Social Work, and started working with Basic Needs as the Case Manager in 2020. 

Kathleen Moroney

Kathleen Graduated from UCSB worked in biotech in the bay area and moved to Chico where she got a job in the Vice President for Student Affair’s office over 13 years ago. While working there she discovered a need on campus for a pantry and went about establishing the Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry. She is proud and honored to be considered the founder of this incredible program that directly impacts student success. 

Joe Picard

For more than 22 years, Joe has successfully developed and implemented regional, national and international education programs, grants and initiatives for California State University, Chico. In 2014, as volunteer staff, he joined the early program development efforts of Kathleen Moroney, in founding the Wildcat Pantry. In support of the CSU’s Basic Needs Initiative, Picard, in collaboration with campus and community stakeholders, established Chico State’s Basic Needs Project in 2016, significantly expanding basic needs services for homeless students and those experiencing poverty.
