Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge and are mindful that CSU, Chico stands on lands that were originally occupied by the first people of this area, and we recognize the Mechoopda and their distinctive spiritual relationship with this land and the waters that run through campus. We are humbled that our campus resides upon sacred lands that once sustained the Mechoopda people for centuries and continue to do so today.

On this episode we are joined by staff and students from the Chico Student Success Center (CSSC) REACH (Raising Educational Achievement in Collaborative Hubs) Program. The CSSC and REACH seeks to serve and support first generation, low income and traditionally under-represented learners, from outreach to graduation, with personalized attention to their academic goals and individual journey.
To do this, they have developed clear paths to tutoring, financial and academic planning, collaborative learning communities, and effective study environments for all REACH students.
Jessica is a first-generation college graduate and proud alumna of Chico State. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Public Administration, and has been working professionally as a staff member for 13 years. For the last four years, she has had the privilege of working for the Chico Student Success Center as the REACH Program Coordinator. REACH is a peer-mentoring program aimed at helping support first-gen students in their transition from high school to college. The best part of her job is helping REACHers see and reach their potential as they navigate college. Seeing the growth and change from first-year to senior year is truly amazing, and she feels lucky to be part of their journey.
Don’t let your vision be blocked by your circumstances.
Angelica is a first-generation college student from Half Moon Bay, CA. She is currently enrolled in the final semester of the Nursing Program at CSU Chico. Her long term goal is to eventually work as a critical care nurse, and further her education to become a nurse practitioner. She has been working for the CSSC Reach program as a Data Collections and Processing Analyst for the past year and a half and was a peer mentor in the program two years prior.
My name is Enrique Galvan, but most of my friends call me Ricky! I come from a small town 30 minutes south of Chico called Gridley, CA. I am a first-generation college student who graduated last year with my BA in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. I am currently in my second year as a masters student within the MA Social Science program with an option in Career & Life Planning. After I finish my MA degree, I would love to be an advisor or counselor to help students who come from first-gen/underrepresented communities like me!
