Episode 37 – TRiO / Student Support Services
First Generation - One of Many

TRiO / Student Support Services

“Enter to learn, depart to serve” Mary McLeod Bethune

Through outreach, access, resources, and community,  TRiO / Student Support Services at Butte College and Chico State are working to achieve Bethune’s call to action. This episode highlights what is happening on both campuses in efforts to enhance students’ experiences in and out of the classroom. The guests on this episode are all TRiO / SSS alum, two of whom currently work Butte and the other two at Chico State. No matter the campus, they are all fulfilling their desire to serve others and positively impact students lives.

Our Guests

Alison Saechao

Alison is a retention specialist at Butte College TRIO Student Support Services. She was born and raised in Oroville and was in TRIO throughout high school as an Educational Talent Search participant. After high school, Alison went to CSU Chico where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in History and Asian Studies in 2016 and eventually her Master’s degree in history (also at Chico State) in 2020. As the oldest in the family, Alison became the first in her household to receive both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. She also got the opportunity to study abroad for a year during my undergrad years and is a huge advocate for first-generation students to pursue higher education and to go study abroad.

Yolanda Salazar

Yolanda is currently the interim director of the Butte College TRIO SSS program. Formerly the assistant director of the CSU, Chico TRIO Educational Talent Search program, the program which she credits with helping her get to and through college. As a first gen student she understands how important TRIO programs are and what a difference they make in the lives of first gen, low income and students with disabilities that are on their college journeys.

Enrique “Ricky” Galvan

Ricky is a first-generation college student from Gridley, CA, and also a proud Chico State Alumni! Ricky graduated in 2019 with my BA in psychology with a minor in sociology, and again in 2021 with my MA in Social Science with the option in career & life planning. Ricky loves to support students throughout their academic journey, and last October he became the new Student Development Coordinator for the TRIO SSS program at Chico State. He is humbled to be in this position, and looking forward to encouraging the next generation of Wildcats!

Joel Ramirez

Joel is a proud alumnus of the TRIO SSS program at Chico State. I was originally born in Mexico, and grew up in exciting and exotic Oroville, California with one older brother and two older sisters. Before TRIO SSS, I worked in Student Life & Leadership, where I gained valuable skills in risk management, freedom of speech, event and project management, and most importantly supporting/advising students. When not at work, you may find me out playing tennis, cycling, or watching all different types of movies.
